Description

The project addresses the failure to provide people with disabilities with access to adapted sports as a means of educational and social integration. The project aims at overcoming the problem by providing free-of-charge swimming lessons to 25 children and young people with disabilities. First, the 25 participants will be selected. Second, adapted swimming lessons (64 classes for 8 months) will be provided to people with intellectual and physical challenges, autism and special educational needs in 2 swimming pools in Sofia City. Third, the participants will be taken to a 10-day summer camp at the seaside to adapt to the sea environment and take part in different sea games. Finally, the participants will compete in a swimming tournament on December 3, the UN International day of Persons with Disabilities. The project will benefit the 25 children and young people involved, their parents, 20 volunteers, their teachers and the local community in general.

Summary of project results

The project targeted the current problems and policy for dissemination of the educational and social values of sport as well as ensuring the access of people with disabilities to a broader range of opportunities for full involvement in motor recovery, rehabilitation and sports activities. The activities carried out helped 25 children and young people with disabilities in Sofia City had access and opportunity to receive swimming lessons free of charge and the lessons were targeted at training, sport, rehabilitation, recreation and interaction of the trainees. The trainers and volunteers involved in the project activities acquired new knowledge, skills, practical experience and competence during provision of the innovative social service through the means of adapted physical activity and sports for people with disabilities. Innovative methodology and learning algorithm for adapted education and training as a social service was developed and applied and it can be spread and multiply its effect in other localities in the future.
