Description

The project addresses the need to support 42 children and adults with disabilities placed in 4 new family-type facilities in the town of Lovech. The project aims at raising awareness about their rights and supporting them by training the social service workers to use a new model of social care and the UN Convention on the rights of People with Disabilities. First, 4 round tables will be held at the 4 facilities to present the main rights under the Convention and the new model. Second, 40 social service workers will be trained to use the model. Third, a round table will be held with the stakeholders (NGOs, trustee boards, families, municipality) on the use of Article 12 of the UN Convention. Finally, 2 experts will provide ongoing support to the people in the 4 facilities. The project will benefit the children and adults with disabilities, their relatives, the social service workers, the institutions and the local community. The partner will help the applicant introduce the new model.

Summary of project results

In 2014 42 children and young people with different types and severity of disabilities were placed in residential service centres in the city of Lovech. In the course of building relations of trust between the children, young people and the new staff, it was necessary to ensure and guarantee independent and objective support and awareness of these people to protect their fundamental and specific rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Some of the project activities carried out aimed to involve actively the children and people with disabilities in various forms of involvement and and civic participation. The project implementation resulted in a change in the direct work of 40 employees of the residential service facilities and supported the process of deinstitutionalization and equality of people taken out of the institutions. Additional support was provided to 38 employees in 4 new residential service facilities and 42 children and people with disabilities taken out of the institutions. The association continues to work with the children, persons and employees of the Family-Type Care Centre based on the good relations of partnership and the additional support provided through social services. Follow-up training sessions and exchange of experience were planned to achieve sustainability of results. For more information, please, visit: http: www.sgilovech.com
