Description

The project addresses the need of the applicant to boost its capacity for monitoring and advocacy. The project aims at boosting the capacity by upgrading and maintaining several online platforms presenting data about public policies. First, several online platforms will be upgraded and maintained, i.e. Open Parliament, For Fair Elections, Protection (on asylum seekers in Bulgaria) and the online show The Furious. Second, a guide for data analysis and visualization for successful advocacy campaigns will be compiled. Third, 3 one-day hackathons will be held to train people new skills to work with data and improve cooperation between experts from the IT community, civil activists and NGOs. Finally, a traineeship programme will be set up in cooperation with 3 Sofia universities and students of public administration, political and social science and law. The project will benefit the applicant’s team, NGOs, the media, young people, activists and the local community in general.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the need of the applicant to boost its capacity for monitoring and advocacy. Its activities aimed at integrating the knowledge and skills seeking to make a difference together. Their capacity for monitoring and advocacy increased by means of data use and visualization. The participants in the project put in effort to upgrade online platforms, create an activist spirit in the community and build relations with three Bulgarian universities. The training of trainees helped create an informal network of young professionals. The project helped enhance civil control over the institutions and the public debate on the importance of open governance further put pressure on the administration. In 2015 big open source data volumes were published and the organization continued with its advocacy campaigns. Communication with the Ministry of Interior resulted in the creation of a subsection with data about the migration flow presented on Protection website. The traineeship programme continued to be implemented and Roma trainees were included. The organization also worked on the Open Parliament initiative under the project and was assisted by the ID Department of the National Assembly regarding the data on parliamentary activity. The project outcomes achieved: upgraded platforms; the Guide History with Data; information and training seminars held; implemented pilot traineeship programme with the participation of students from 3 universities. Project participants: trainees - 10; academia - 18; media - 19; IT experts - 5; NGOs - 19; institutions - 7; new followers – 1812.
