Description

The project addresses the challenged access to HIV prevention services in Burgas District for 3 high-risk groups of HIV-positive people, i.e. injecting drug users (IDU), men who have sex with men (MSM) and commercial sex workers (CSW). The project aims at empowering them to be included in HIV prevention. First, 30 members of the 3 groups will be trained to assist in HIV prevention. These 30 members will have a basic 3-day training on HIV, sexually transmitted infections, blood-borne diseases, methods to give up risk behavior and a 2-day follow-up training on leadership and lobbying. Second, the trainees will start working with the 3 groups, reaching 300 people, informing and organizing self-help groups. Third, the 3 groups will be encouraged to take part in local HIV prevention activities. Finally, the 3 groups will be able to discuss HIV prevention with local authorities. The project will benefit the 3 high-risk groups, healthcare institutions, decision-makers and the public.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the challenged access to HIV prevention services in Burgas District for 3 high-risk groups of HIV-positive people, i.e. injecting drug users (IDU), men who have sex with men (MSM) and commercial sex workers (CSW). The project developed the innovative practice of HIV/AIDS prevention involving the representatives of the risk groups. 30 persons from the high-risk groups were trained and raised their competence to protect personal health and convey the message in the community. 27 employed members of the target groups took part in the project activities and more than 3 000 contacts were established with more than 300 members of the risk groups during the field work; 15 self-help groups were formed. 3 types of leaflets and 5 issues of the magazine, each with a circulation of 100 copies and full of specialized materials with messages to young people, were widely spread under the project. HIV prevention authorities in the city of Bourgas showed interest in the project activities. A representative of Dose of Love Association was included in the Local Public Committee on HIV in Bourgas.
