Summary of project results

The project addressed the social isolation faced by disadvantaged young people (orphans, unemployed, Roma) in Varna District mainly due to lack of appropriate labor skills. In the course of a year 42 disadvantage young people from small villages and towns in the area were trained to work at sea and join the community of people working at sea. The young people who took part in the project were trained to work at sea and received a certificate for working as a “scuba diver” and/or “captain of a vessel up to 40 GRT at sea". Contacts were established with representatives of the seafaring community to provide the young men with job opportunities. Three of the young men were hired before the project end. Half of the trainees showed their willingness to join the activities of the Friends of the Sea Marine Club. The project activities included updating programmes and methodology for work with the target group, trainings, situation games, interactive informal training. The young people were directly involved in their own training and took part in the debriefing of each lesson.
