Description
The project addresses high morbidity and mortality rate among the Roma due to unhealthy living and eating. The project aims at raising awareness of the Roma about healthy eating and cooking wholesome food on a budget. First, information meetings will be held in 4 cities in Lovech Municipality. 12 participants (1 culinary demonstrator and 2 assistants) will be selected. Second, the 12 participants will be trained on healthy eating, cooking, diets and public presenting. Third, 8 culinary demonstrations will be held in the 4 cities (2 per city) focused on healthy eating, wholesome foods and healthy recipes. Finally, an information campaign on healthy eating will be launched among the Roma community in Lovech District raising the awareness of about 20 000 people. The project will benefit the Roma community in the 4 selected cities, local health authorities and the public in general helping the Roma improve their eating and living habits.
Summary of project results
The project was targeted at Roma and people at risk of poverty from the towns of Lovech, Letnitsa, Lukovit and Ugarchin. The project met the need of targeted action to encouraging and raising the awareness and knowledge of the representatives of the target groups for healthy foods, quality and advantageous shopping and cooking lean recipes. The participants shared their satisfaction, showed their will to change their diet and take on healthy eating habits. The project team worked with all the family members in order to achieve a real positive change. The involvement of the children helped achieve the change. As a result of the project 4 local teams were set up and 12 representatives of the target group raised their capacity for a healthy diet and 8 cooking classes were carried out. Letnitsa Municipality, Happy Childhood Kindergarten in the village of Kirchevo, an NGO from Lukovit and the Pensioners’ Club from Lovech were more than willing to continue the activities after the project end. The following project outputs were developed: a plan for culinary demonstration in a Roma community, training programmes and materials on the project topic; promotional products.
