Description

The project addresses violence, intolerance, vandalism and xenophobia in society, in children and youth in particular. The project aims at promoting tolerance and solidarity by means of introducing the main democratic values to children in an accessible and interactive way. First, an educational program of 5 modules will be developed on intercultural communication, diversity, democracy and governance. The modules will be presented to 75 children aged 5-7 from 32nd municipal kindergarten in Sofia City. Second, the needed consumables for the classes will be purchased. Third, the children will have 30-minute democracy lessons twice per week. Finally, all the information about the project, its development and outcome will be uploaded on the project website. The project will benefit the children involved, their parents and teachers as well as the local community in general.

Summary of project results

Frequent manifestations of aggression, violence, intolerant attitude towards the other, unhealthy nationalism and xenophobia, often involving children and young people, both in Bulgaria and globally, make such projects necessary. The project aims at introducing children from pre-school preparatory classes to the main values of modern democracy in a child-friendly, interactive and amusing way. This is a good foundation for the education of "the little" citizens in the spirit of tolerance, acceptance of the other and positive attitude towards the world. The management of Balgarche 32nd Nursery and Kindergarten and the parents of the children involved in the project accepted our ideas which can be seen from the increased number of target group members in the course of the project. Curricula were prepared for 5 areas: 1) "The others and me: What makes us different and the same"; 2) "Let’s dance together"; 3) "We all love good food"; 4) "Let’s Celebrate Together"; 5)"Who rules us: Democracy for Children“.342 classes with more than 100 children aged 5-7 were held. The management of Balgarche 32nd Nursery and Kindergarten intends to keep organizing such classes for its children, introducing them to such concepts as “tolerance”, “difference, “living together”, “democracy”, “citizen”, “rights”, “obligations”, etc. in a child-friendly manner.
