Description

The project addresses successful integration of asylum seekers granted asylum in Bulgaria. The project aims at ensuring their cultural, educational and civil integration in the society through Bulgarian language, culture and history lessons. First, the methodology for teaching Bulgarian language to asylum seekers and for their cultural adaptation will be developed. Second, 60 children and adolescents aged 7-18 from Vrazhdebna Reception Centre will have 75 Bulgarian language classes and sit Bulgarian language tests. Third, children and young asylum seekers will visit cultural and historical sites in Sofia City, schools and traditional craft workshops to learn about Bulgarian history, customs, traditions and education system. Finally, a guide will be published with the information needed by asylum seekers after they leave the reception centre. The project will benefit the children and families of asylum seekers, local competent authorities and the whole society in general.

Summary of project results

The activities planned in the project meet the need of the asylum seekers accommodated in the temporary accommodation centres in Sofia City to know their civil rights as well as the mechanisms and the procedure whereby they can get enrolled in the education system that would contribute significantly for their integration. Three groups of children and adolescents seeking asylum aged 7-18 were set up; they had Bulgarian language classes under the project, attended a number of workshops and cultural and historical sites and these activities helped their integration by boosting their knowledge of Bulgarian language, culture and history. 2 teams of teachers and assistant teachers of Bulgarian language were hired under the project to have the classes with the children seeking asylum; in addition, an expert and an advisor on cultural and education adaptation were hired. The activities held and the 225 classes in total were attended by 508 children and adolescents from Registration and Reception Centre (RRC) Voenna Rampa – 1st course /aged 7-11 – 321 and aged 12-18 – 187/, 406 children and adolescents from RRC Voenna Rampa– 2nd course /aged 7-11 – 302 and aged 12-18 – 104/ and 371 children and adolescents from RRC Ovsha Kupel –third course/ aged 7-11 – 173 and aged 12-18 – 198/.
