Programme Summary
Why we support environmental monitoring, planning and control in Romania Quality geographic information and up to date maps are important for planning and developing of infrastructure, for construction, for land use planning, and for nature protection. Digital geographic information is increasingly used for the purpose of nature protection and when addressing the effects of climate change. The importance of geographic information is underlined by several EU directives, and it is used for policy making, planning and when implementing activities on the ground. The exchange and sharing of geographic information across national borders is also important since broad information access is the basis for harmonised environmental policies across Europe. Romania is lacking up to date maps for a wide range of usage, including providing geographic information. On topographic maps, little has been done for the past 20 years. Due to financial constraints, Romania has until now only been able to produce a limited amount of relevant and up to date geographical information. What the key priorities are Increase the capacity of the Romanian National Agency for Cadastre and Land registration in preparing geographic information needed for environmental monitoring and reporting What we will achieve • Production of a detailed terrain model and new maps for approximately 50 000 km2, including environmentally sensitive areas and areas prone to flood risk • Development of a database of geographic names to improve public access to geographical information on the internet • Capacity building and transfer of knowledge through two study visits and training of ten experts from the Romanian National Agency for Cadastre and Land Registration Who will benefit The programme will be implemented through one pre-defined project. The overall objective is to enhance the capacity of the Romanian National Agency for Cadastre and Land Registration in preparing geographic information needed for environmental monitoring and reporting. How bilateral relations will be strengthened The Norwegian Mapping Authority and Registers Iceland are involved in the project, further strengthening the co-operation with the Romanian counterpart.
