The partnership with the European Commission ensures that the EEA and Norway Grants are spent in a way that complements the EU’s own funding schemes while adhering to EU rules and regulations.
Every programme that is being implemented under the Grants is screened by the European Commission. This is being done in the form of so-called screening requests from the Financial Mechanism Office – the secretariat of the Grants based in Brussels. The Commission receives a short summary of each proposed programme, which is sent to the relevant Directorates-General (DGs) for review.
The screening is in place to ensure maximal effectiveness of the funding as well as compliance with various EU rules and regulations. The process is coordinated by DG Regio.
All the 16 beneficiary countries receiving funding from the EEA and Norway Grants are members of the EU.
