Description

The project aims to show that Roma’s migration has positive aspects; recent studies show that Roma migration actually has significant positive aspects. In this regard two articles published in 2012 in Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies highlight that migration affects the emancipation of Roma women roles in their families and communities: it increases their self-esteem, it leads to women becoming economic contributors which gives them more power within the family and community. Migration, shown in these studies, transforms traditional roles and is a form of empowerment leading to gaining social mobility, and an economic and cultural 'home'. Roma women are considered to have acquired emancipator roles in their families and communities. At least 20 women will be interviewed and around 60 people will take part in a survey (questionnaire). This project considers that Roma craftsmen are potentially less likely to migrate, if their traditional distribution channels are reinforced. Two Roma arts and crafts festivals taking place in Norway offer ten Roma craftsmen the possibility to show their skills which could raise awareness about the fact that Roma craftsmen have the skills to provide for themselves outside the process of migration. The project results in a report and an academic article on the positive aspects of migration, ten video clips of Roma traditional crafts, an interactive photo exhibition, six events promoting Roma culture and the positive aspects of migration - two festivals, two thematic workshops, two press conferences- one in Romania and one in Norway. It is expected that at least 80 people in Romania will be informed in a direct way on the results of the research study and at least 500 visitors in Norway will be gain access to Roma culture.
