Description

The project Art Doesn’ t Hate - Celebration of Value promotes the role of art and an inclusive multicultural environment to achieve greater inter-ethnic tolerance in schools. The project promotes intercultural dialogue at school level to include vulnerable Roma children. The project raises awareness about the necessity and effectiveness of promoting cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue via creating an inclusive education environment and increasing the importance of intercultural education in school curricula to foster the inclusion and improve the school performance of Roma children.The project enhances the capacity of vulnerable Roma children to access inclusive artistic education by supporting and recognizing their performance in various artistic domains (music/painting/photography, etc.).. The target group consists of 25-30 Roma children (age 11-18), selected from 5 art schools/high schools in Bucharest, who will be taught by specialists during thematic classes (music, painting, photography, acting, etc). Roma children will perform in a concert that promotes tolerance and anti-discrimination.

Summary of project results

The project created an activity framework for mixed ethnic groups, by advocating for intercultural education as part of core curriculum at high-school level and by organizing educational clubs for 25-30 Roma students and a similar number of non-Roma students, in 5 high schools from Bucharest. The objective was to sustain a positive attitude of acceptance and respect for the voice of Roma people, to fight against intolerance and discrimination in high-schools. At the end of the implementation, as a result of qualitative research to assess the impact of the project, the project promoter reported that the acceptance of the Roma students increased within the target group and within the local community. Enhanced role for art and intercultural education for the social inclusion of Roma students in 5 high-schools from Bucharest was accomplished through completion of the series of artistic events meant to raise awareness for the larger community from Bucharest, concerning the importance of the cultural dialogue and social inclusion and intercultural education classes at high-school level The delivered outputs in order to achieve the planned results were clubs/educational activities with mixed groups of students, with final thematic contests and an exhibition, an open air concert, in a park from Bucharest, aiming to foster the cultural-diversity awareness and understanding, 1 position paper sent to the Ministry of Education and to partner institutions for proposing intercultural education and art as effective means to promote Roma social inclusion. Students from 5 participating institutions were involved in art, drama, journalism, music and photography workshops and intercultural communication classes. An advocacy campaign based on their suggestions was conducted. The campaign promoted the idea that the intercultural education should be part of the Romanian core-curriculum. Artistic activities were used with the aim to change the perceptions on the Roma minority within the public connected with the project and to encourage.
