Description

This project aims to promote active citizenship among immigrant women through an individualized approach, based on information and knowledge transfer (adjusted to the cultural and linguistic characteristics of each woman) about their rights prior to their active citizenship involvement. Besides this individualized approach, our goal is also to form a group of immigrant women of different nationalities, and promote their empowerment so that they can play an active role as volunteers and as information providers in their communities. Several knowledge transfer meetings and seminars will be organized to raise awareness and disseminate information about the different areas addressed by this project.

Summary of project results

Immigrant women face double discrimination, being both immigrant and women. An immigrants’ association promoted this project in order to raise awareness on the rights of this target group. The participants were mostly from Portuguese-speaking African countries and Brazil. In all, 794 beneficiaries received personalized support on legal matters – exceeding expectations – of which 374 already had a satisfactory outcome by the time the project was concluded. Each received information on their rights taking into account their specific needs and sociocultural and language background. 13 of these women also assumed a more active role in the project, taking part in volunteering for the first time, and in some cases receiving training on computer skills. These volunteers aided in awareness raising actions which were also carried out as part of the project, which were attended by 167 beneficiaries, also exceeding the set target.
