Description

The project responds to the need for a sustainable architectural design educational offer at the doctorate level. There is currently a lack of English-speaking doctoral studies in this matter in Poland. Highlights of the new curriculum will be: non-destructive methods of testing the impact of urbanization, digital tools integrating interdisciplinary knowledge (architectural, environmental, sociological) and anticipating the environmental consequences of design activities (simulations). The project objectives include increasing environmental awareness and improving the quality of higher education via the development of English-speaking doctoral courses in WAPW. This will be achieved through curriculum preparation, increasing environmental awareness of students, graduates and university staff, and increasing the universities’ knowledge base. Results: curriculum development, quality culture improvement, skills and awareness increase. These efforts will strengthen the education system by establishing an innovative curriculum, new research methods and interactive tools.

Summary of project results

The project responds to the need for innovative doctoral education offer in architecture and urban design in the context of sustainable development. The new curriculum highlights non-destructive methods of testing the impact of urbanization, digital tools integrating interdisciplinary knowledge (architectural, environmental, sociological) and anticipating the environmental consequences of design activities. The project’s overall objective was increasing awareness of environmental monitoring and improving the quality of education through development of the English-speaking doctoral programs at WUT’s Faculty of Architecture (further “WAPW”). The project included specifically: 1. Preparation of the English-speaking doctoral curriculum at WAPW. 2. Development of teaching tools, methods, and materials needed to start doctoral studies at WAPW. 3. Promoting increased environmental awareness of students, graduates, and university staff on the environment and climate change and increasing the universities' knowledge base in this regard. 4. Developing a culture of quality - modification of internal education quality assurance systems at WAPW. The project was divided into five main tasks: 1. Project management, which included project’s Program Council’s supervision over other tasks; 2. Curriculum development, in which the team of specialists prepared the PhD program and 10 academic scripts, and evaluated it in two study visits to Norwegian scientific institutions; the team was also responsible for equipping and furnishing rooms for the ASK PhD students; 3. Social research and analysis, in which the team of specialists conducted a series of research in order to determine potential of the new program; 4. Modification of WAPW’s quality assurance system; 5. Dissemination of project’s outcomes, including organization of international scientific conference and publication of a monograph. During the project assumed results were accomplished by the project team. Additionally, a number of additional outcomes were reached, which increase the project’s value: Developing an interactive on-line learning platform supporting the teaching process (Moodle) and website for the new studies; and visiting two internationally recognized architectural studios where we discussed possible career paths for PhDs in architecture.
