Description

Europe takes a special place on the ecological map because, on the one hand, it is characterized by an increase in citizen's awareness, while on the other, it remains at the forefront of natural resource usage. Economic and technological development reflects the living standard of Europeans and lead to the formation of consumer society. The aim of the project is to create an educational module dedicated to sustainable development and based on the Icelandic experience in this field. Expected results are the extended educational offer of the Project Promoter, trained staff, and eventually an increase of the module participants' awareness. The results will be acquired by preparing academic teachers to create the module and a workshop. The benefits will be the innovative educational module, development of cooperation and priceless exchange of experience. The partner’s role is the involvement in the workshops and training as well as in common action aimed at creating the sustainable development module.

Summary of project results

The project intended to develop a teaching module focusing on sustainable development. Sólheimar – an eco-village with long experience in this field – was an Icelandic partner involved in the development of the module. Sustainable development was treated in an inclusive way and included such exact sciences as architecture and land management, as well as humanities such as management and sociology. The project involved educating lecturers who - having acquired new knowledge - worked on the concept of the module for students of various cycles of degree programmes. The added value of the project consists in its international dimension, practical character of information coming from the partner and the adaptation of the module to the expectations of the labour market. The project implementation involved training and workshops for academic staff. Experts and the Icelandic partner participated in the teaching process. On the basis of their freshly acquired knowledge and Icelandic models, lecturers developed a teaching model for the students of first- and second-cycle degree programmes. The module provides the basis for training and courses offered by the HEI. The project is an inspiration to carry on the modernisation of the HEI – among other things there are plans for the introduction of a waste sorting system. The most important outcomes and impact: (1) acquisition of practical knowledge, participation in expert-led training; (2) establishing direct contact between lecturers and the Icelandic institution likely to result in stronger cooperation in selected scientific domains in the future; (3) practical dissemination of the idea of sustainable development among students and lecturers; (4) development of a teaching module focusing on sustainable development.

Summary of bilateral results

The Icelandic partner shared its knowledge and experience concerning sustainable development. Solheimar is an example of institution that functions based on sustainable development principles and its whole activity illustrates professional implementation of sustainable development into life. The partner participated in the training activities and the international aspect added significant value to the project. Cooperation might be continue after completion of the STF project, probably within the Erasmus+ Programme. The most important outcomes and impact for Icelandic partner: establishing direct contact between Polish and the Icelandic institution likely to result in stronger cooperation in selected scientific domains in the future.
