Description

The project „Establisment of Educational Module on „Climate Change” in the University of Liepaja” is needed not only to enhance the scientific capacity of the University of Liepaja, but also to increase society’s knowledge and awareness of the climate change both in the world and Latvia. The aim of the project is a fully developed and approbated educational module „Climate Change”, that includes an overview of the theoretical basis on climate change processes in the nature and human impact on it, and also description of laboratory tasks. The expected result of the project is a fully developed and approbated educational module „Climate Change”, that includes an overview of the legal basis that is binding for Latvia, theoretical basis on climate change processes in the nature and human ipmact on it, and also description of laboratory tasks that would allow to practically learn the possibilities of using renewable energy resources in Latvia and the basis for which is modelling software, equipment and technology that is available in the University of Liepaja.

Summary of project results

The project results enhance the scientific capacity of the University of Liepaja, but also to increase society’s knowledge and awareness of the climate change both in the world and Latvia. The expected result of the project is a fully developed and approbated educational module „Climate Change”. Educational module „Climate Change” will include a regulatory framework, which is binding on Latvia, an overview of the database in the context of climate change theories of human influence on the nature and, as well as practical job descriptions, based on modeling software, equipment and technologies that are available and which would allow the practice of the University of Liepaja to study the use of renewable energy opportunities in Latvia. Educational programme module “Climate change” aim was to develop educational programme module as a part of a number of study courses which aim to teach students to analyze environmental factors, to make projections and to operate in practice with advanced technology. Environmental chemistry and physics laboratory equipment is used for the implementation of education module, including industrial type bioreactor and modern computer programs. Module is oriented to modeling and simulation of environmental process, creating environmental factor prognosis. Educational programme module is integrated in the following study courses: • Climate Technologies • The use of renewable resources • Environment process modeling • Practice solutions for environmental engineering Study course „Climate Technologies” is targeted at studying engineering solutions for CO2 emission reduction and new technologies. The course “The use of renewable resources” aims to study renewable energy technologies – from well-known solar, wind and hydropower, up to advanced technologies – graphene solar cells, energy harvesting, etc. Course “Environmental process modeling” aims to develop student skills in environmental sciences for the current global data design, modeling and simulation. Course „Practice solutions for environmental engineering” is devoted to study various engineering solutions (pressure, temperature, level, flow sensors, various types of analyzers, valves, data recorders, etc.), which are used in industry and their application capabilities.
