Description

The historic wooden villa „Anapilis“ in Palanga town was built at the end of the 19th century and has features of historicism, art deco and Swiss style villas. It is one of the best known buildings in the seaside of Lithuania distinguished by its complex structure, asymmetrical composition, refined fretwork and rich history. The project is aimed at preserving this valuable yet deteriorating building which will bring social and economic benefits through increased touristic attractiveness of the resort and developed infrastructure for cultural events of the local community. During implementation of the project, works of restoration and repair will be carried out to protect the building from further decay. A lift will be installed to make the building more accessible to visitors with disabilities. Once the project is finished, a museum will be established in the building to present the history of Palanga resort to the public. The revitalised „Anapilis“ also offers scope for cultural events and expositions, local community‘s cultural activity and increased tourist flows. In order to raise public awareness of cultural heritage, a two-days seminar will be organized combining theory and practical exercises. Experts from Lithuania and Latvia will cover topics of cultural heritage research, legal acts regulating cultural heritage protection and management, traditional wooden architecture peculiarities, protection of authenticity and fire prevention. Practical part of the training will be focused on the restoration of architectural elements.

Summary of project results

The project was needed to preserve the deteriorating historic wooden villa „Anapilis“, which was built in Palanga town at the end of the 19th century and was one of the best known buildings in the seaside of Lithuania, distinguished by its complex structure, asymmetrical composition, refined fretwork and rich history. During implementation of the project restoration and repair works were carried out to protect villa "Anapilis" from further decay, also a lift was installed in the building. In the course of project implementation a two-days seminar combining theory and practical exercises was organized in order to raise public awareness of cultural heritage (with more than 30 participants attending). During the theoretical part of the seminar experts covered topics of cultural heritage research, traditional wooden architecture peculiarities, protection of authenticity and fire prevention. Practical part of the training was focused on woodcarving. Since 23 September 2016 villa “Anapilis” is open for visitors. Palanga Resort Museum, which was established in villa “Anapilis”, is organizing excursions, cultural events, exhibitions. The project contributed to the adaptation of the historic building to the needs of the local community and to the increased touristic attractiveness of Palanga.
