Description

Waste is a potential threat to human health and the environment if not handled correctly. At the same time, it can also be a resource that can reduce the use of virgin materials and generate energy. Better waste management has been on the agenda in the EU, particularly in the old Member States, for the last 20 to 30 years. New waste strategies and legislation on the handling of waste have been introduced at both EU and national levels. In general, the requirements for waste management have been harmonised in the EU during this period, especially over the last 10 to 15 years. This, together with the introduction of the single market in the EU in 1993, which stimulated transboundary shipments of goods, including waste, has prompted an increase in waste shipments between EU Member States for treatment and disposal, and an increase in illegal shipment of waste. The project aims to prevent and detect illegal movements of waste, reduce illegal transfrontier transport of waste / hazardous waste in Hungary. To reach the above mentioned goal, other means have to be determined. The increase of intellectual capacity, training are relevant elements of the project taking into account the human issues, therefore the equality of women in working and career building. The aim of the Green Commando is to filter out illegal waste shipments and create a wide range of monitoring covering the whole country. With this measure it will be possible to reduce the shipments getting across and endangering their environment in Hungary, the bordering countries and the area of the European Union. Hungary is in many ways an important crossroads in Europe, serving the transport needs for both Schengen and non-Schengen countries. Our goal is to strengthen the compliance to community environmental law and the consistent implementation and enforcement of community environmental law by member states.
