Description

In Hungary, there is significant energy saving potential in the reduction of buildings' energy consumption; the share of the buildings in the country’s primary energy usage is approximately 40%. The energy consumption of public schools and kindergartens with outdated building structures are higher than the average; a reduction of approximately 55% in their energy consumption can be reached by their energy efficient modernization. The project supports the EU and national energy efficiency objectives and it is in accordance with the aims of the Hungarian National Energy Strategy 2030, the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan as well as the National Building Energy Efficiency Strategy. Furthermore, it contributes to the 2020 objective of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 20%. The primary objective of the project is the energy efficient modernization of the Hatvani István Elementary School’s building in Debrecen, including heat insulation, replacement of outside doors and windows, modernization of heat system, installation of an adjustable lighting system and solar cells for the electric power supply of the building as well as intelligent building controlling system. Furthermore, training will be held for the maintainers and teachers as well as an awareness raising campaign will be organized for students, parents, teachers and local stakeholders. By reduction of heat loss and modernization of the building, natural gas usage and CO2 emission can be reduced and maintenance and operational costs can be saved. Estimated CO2 savings to be achieved by the energy efficient modernization of the school’s building is 127.78 ton per year while estimated energy saving is 661.10 MWh per year. Beneficiaries of the project results include students, teachers, educators, assistants and co-workers, whose comfort feeling and working conditions can be enhanced and environmental awareness can be raised.

Summary of project results

In Hungary, there is significant energy saving potential in the reduction of buildings' energy consumption; the share of the buildings in the country’s primary energy usage is approximately 40%. The energy consumption of public schools and kindergartens with outdated building structures are higher than the average; a reduction of approximately 55% in their energy consumption can be reached by their energy efficient modernization. Furthermore, it contributes to the 2020 objective of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 20%. The primary objective of the project was the energy efficient modernization of the Hatvani István Elementary School’s building in Debrecen, including heat insulation, replacement of outside doors and windows, modernization of heat system, installation of an adjustable lighting system and solar panel system for the electric power supply of the building as well as intelligent building controlling system. The project included the installation of an intelligent building management system and trainings (two training materials were prepared and two trainings were held for the teachers and the operator staff), competitions and other awareness raising activities for students, their parents and other local stakeholders. By reduction of heat loss and modernization of the building, natural gas usage and CO2 emission is reduced and maintenance and operational costs can be saved. The targeted, estimated CO2 savings to be achieved (during the maintenance period) by the energy efficient modernization of the school’s building is 127.78 ton per year while estimated energy saving is 661.10 MWh per year, which targets were achieved as the result of the project. Beneficiaries of the project results included more than the targeted 600 students as well as teachers, educators, assistants and co-workers, whose comfort feeling and working conditions are enhanced and environmental awareness was raised. The project was also reached the inhabitants of the city with its message (the targeted 20,000 persons were reached).
