Description

Karpenissi is a town in central Greece. It is the capital of the regional unit of Evrytania. Municipality of Karpenissi faces many challenges including the low utilization of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in its public infrastructures. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the application of RES in municipal buildings. Through the project photovoltaics, solar thermal collectors, biomass burners, and LED lighting systems will be installed in order to cover the energy demands of two school buildings. The project is expected to achieve drastic energy savings and to strengthen awareness in the sustainable use of renewable energy, familiarizing inhabitants with sustainable practices and improving the quality of life. The main beneficiaries of the project will be the citizens of Karpenissi with dissemination activities also generating awareness among the broader public.

Summary of project results

Greece is a country with very high potential of RES exploitation even in the mountain situated cities. All RES integration projects contribute to the local and national targets regarding CO2 footprint alleviation. Furthermore, decentralised self-balanced production improves the operation of the national distribution and transmission systems. The objective was to increase the RES capacity of decentralized areas with autonomous systems and contribute to the local sustainable growth by applying carbon-free technologies. Achieved: The replacement of carbon-dependent electricity and heat with zero-emissions RES systems and the reduction of CO2 emissions by 299 tn/year (target of more than 130 tn/year). It is estimated that the project, through the increase of viable renewable energy consumption, will enhance the awareness and education of the local community and visitors. Achieved: Increase of RES consumption by 303 MWh/year (target of approximately 276 MWh per year). Also 2 events within the framework of bilateral relations were organized (Target: 2). Familiarization of Karpenissi inhabitants and neighboring populations with RES Actions. Outputs delivered:  PV autonomous electricity production  Electrical Energy Storage with Vented Tubular Plate Batteries  Installation of Biomass Boilers (replacement of Diesel fuel boilers)  Setting-up of BM, smart-grid and automation sensors  Replacement of fluorescent light fixtures with LED fixtures  Replacement of electric water heater (water for use) with a solar thermal heater  Project Website. The Municipality of Karpenissi continues its green electricity policy by installing RES technologies into municipal building and schedules to increase RES penetration in other areas/applications such as sports facilities and parks. Furthermore it strengthens awareness in the sustainable use of energy through educational events.
