Description

Nea Ionia is a northern suburb of Athens. Nea Ionia faces many challenges including the low utilization of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in its public infrastructures. The objective of the project is to improve the sustainable development of the Community of Nea Ionia by implementing Geothermal and other RES activities in nine (9) emblematic public buildings (Schools, Town Hall, Hospital, etc). Through the project geothermal and solar energy will be used to cover the energy demands of the above buildings. Educational activities will be performed and associated dissemination material will be produced. The project is expected to achieve the increase of renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness and education in the sustainable use of renewable energy, familiarizing inhabitants with sustainable practices and improving the quality of life. The main beneficiaries of the project will be multitudinous groups like local citizens, students, patients, and visitors.

Summary of project results

The objective was to improve the sustainability development of the Community (Municipality of Nea Ionia) by realizing RES projects in the region’s public buildings and thus creating a less carbon-dependent economy. The project increased the renewable energy consumption and built awareness around the sustainable use of renewable energy, familiarizing inhabitants with sustainable practices. Achieved: Upsurge of RES use by 1471 ΜWh/year (Target: 1382 MWh/year). Reduction of CO2 emissions by 617.53 tn/yerar (Target: 611,73 th/year). Organization of 2 events within the framework of bilateral relations. (Target: 2). Activation of users of the nine buildings (1900 people approximately) and local population with RES Actions. Outputs delivered:  Replacement of conventional lighting sources with LED technology lamps (94kW)  Installation of autonomous PV systems at the roof of the buildings (68kWp)  Installation of nine geothermal heat pumps at the mechanical rooms of the buildings (1,274 kW)  Installation of solar collectors at the roof of Public Hospital for the heating of the sanitary water (176 sqm)  Construction of drills (3 geothermal drills of a total length of 250m)  Construction of the central mechanical room and of the water tank (with a capacity of 300 cbm)  Construction of the geothermal tele-conditioning pipe network (expanding to a total length of 1,9 km)  Construction of the supervisory control and data acquisition system which controls, records and monitors the entire application  Projects website with collaboration with the Municipality of Nea Ionia  Accounts on social media (facebook, twiter)  Information material (1,000 leaflets)  Two workshops at the Municipality of Nea Ionia  Guide for RES Investment in the Municipality of Nea Ionia The Municipality of Nea Ionia with the participation of the Konstantopoulio Public Hospital of Nea Ionia, the Institute for Child protection of Athens and the Center for infant Education and Health Care (KEBREFO) of Nea Ionia has applied several RES technical solutions into nine municipal buildings: (1) Konstantopoulio Public Hospital of Nea Ionia, (2) Exemplar House for Children, (3) 1st Nursey School of Nea Ionia, (4) 4th Nursey School of Nea Ionia, (5) 14th Nursey School of Nea Ionia, (6) 6th Elementary School of Nea Ionia, (7) 7th High School of Nea Ionia, (8) 5th Middle School of Nea Ionia and (9) Town Hall of Nea Ionia.
