Description

Andros is the northernmost island of the Greek Cyclades archipelago. One of the major characteristics of the region is the limited exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) despite the high potential of the area. The objective of the project is to support the sustainable development of the Island by embedded RES demonstration projects in its infrastructure. More specifically, the following projects will be implemented: (a) Installation of a 50kWp Autonomous PV System in Korthi’s biological water treatment plant, (b) Installation of PV Lighting Systems in squares and streets of Chora, (c) Installation of two solar-driven charging stations for the support of electrical vehicles. The project is expected to achieve the increase of renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness and education in the sustainable use of renewable energy. The main beneficiaries of the project will be the citizens of Andros Island with publicity activities also generating awareness among the broader public (e.g. Tourists).

Summary of project results

The project helped the Municipality of Andros to prove for the first time in Greece that RES technologies can provide securely power to crucial installation for the community of the island, such as the municipal sewage plant. Additionally, it proved that RES can play a big role in the sustainable development of a Greek island with interventions in the center of the island, as the 84 off grids PV lights have proven. Furthermore, the project is a pioneer in the electric mobility as it demonstrated that PV charging stations can solve the problem of electric supply to electric vehicles. The objective of the project was to increase RES production in Andros island and apply off grid solar technologies in various infrastructures of the island such as the municipal sewage plant. Additionally, the project aimed at the implementation of solar charging stations in order to create a basic infrastructure for electric vehicles. Achieved: A 50 kWp off grid in the area of the biological cleaning which can operate without the supply of the public grid. 84 off grid lights in Chora, Andros which operate without conventional energy supply and 2 solar PV charging stations along with 10 electric vehicles of different types (min I bus, small truck, cars). Total RES consumption 112.86 MWh/year (Target: 97.96 MWh/year). Reduction or avoidance of CO2 emissions 1,450.94 tn/year (Target: 1,211.54 tn/year). Organization of 3 events within the framework of bilateral relations (Target: 3). All the citizens of Andros will see a small discount in their electric bills as they will pay less for the biological cleaning infrastructure and the safety of drivers and pedestrians was increased through lights. The tourism of the island will also benefit as Andros will turn to an environmentally friendly destination.
