Description

La Escalera de Jacob is a cultural space where multiple artistic expressions are gathered. The space is designed for the audience that are looking for an alternative to conventional theatres. The project will bring together jazz musicians from Spain and Norway, and generate a meeting point between the Spanish flamenco-jazz (the melting of jazz and flamenco music) and Nordic jazz-folklore. Spain and Norway have different ways of funding the sector and Spanish entities are interested in learning about how public funding is used to support the Norwegian jazz community. The outcome of the project is the promotion of Norwegian contemporary jazz through the organization of four concerts in Madrid. The last concert will be the result of cooperation between Spanish and Norwegian musicians. A conference to share experiences and ideas regarding cultural policies will also be held. The project will promote circulation of works, capacity development and greater international exchange between Spanish and Norwegian musicians.

Summary of project results

Off de la Latina is a cultural space where multiple artistic expressions are gathered. In the project, they have collaborated with Music Norway, the Norwegian music industry’s export facilitator and promotional organisation. The two organisations have brought together jazz musicians from Spain and Norway and the partnership led to the 1st Norwegian Contemporary Jazz Cycle organized in Madrid. This cycle generated a meeting point between the Spanish flamenco-jazz (the fusion of jazz and flamenco music) and Nordic jazz-folklore. The project encouraged a wider dissemination of Norwegian and Spanish jazz fusion styles, as well inspiration to further exchanges between Spanish and Norwegian musicians. The project consisted of five Norwegian jazz and flamenco jazz concerts accompanied by a cultural exchange workshop between Norwegian and Spanish musicians as well and a round table discussion on how to promote Norwegian and Spanish music abroad. A documentary with footage from all concert and interviews has also been produced. Norwegian contemporary jazz music has been promoted and the cycle made it possible for the Norwegian musicians to reach a new market, and expand their zone of influence.

Summary of bilateral results

Music Norway’s contribution to the project has revolved around finding the adequate Norwegian musicians to participate, establish direct contact between the project promoter and Norwegian agencies and managers, and participate in the round table on cultural policies. The partnership has given Off de la Latina the possibility to work directly with an international promotion model that could be taken in use by the Spanish music promoters. The project have promoted circulation of works, capacity development and greater international exchange between Spanish and Norwegian musicians. The creation of new artistic relations can contribute to strengthen the cultural ties between the two countries, and lead to new innovative music. As a direct consequence of the bilateral bonds established, the project promoter has booked a Norwegian artist to perform at their new cycle of flamenco-jazz that are to be held in Madrid in 2015.
