Summary of project results

Co-educating, i.e. educating people about equality, requires applying an educational framework based on principles of equality between women and men, a philosophy that must form the backbone of all elements of the educational process to ensure compliance. Governments develop programmes aimed at the elimination of discriminatory elements in society. However, stereotypes and gender roles persist in schools. "Plurales" aims to create a general model of intervention that facilitates the design and implementation of Equality Plans in schools as a tool to introduce equal opportunities between women and men in the classroom. Its aim has been to develop guidelines, resources and tools for the diagnosis, implementation and evaluation of gender equality plans in schools. The first phase has focused on the diagnosis of the current state of co-education, which has been based on a comparative analysis of the regulatory frameworks of Spain and Norway; on a compilation of information on organisations, programmes, statistics and related materials in the autonomous communities; and on a selection of good practises at a European level. Subsequently, in a second phase, staff from participant school centres has been trained (67 people) to design specific intervention models in their centres. They have made diagnoses of the current state of equality in their classrooms, have designed equality plans based on this analysis and have implemented them, through various activities. During this process, they have evaluated and readapted the equality plans. As part of this process, three work seminars, "Analysis of specific intervention models", have been organised to exchange experiences and learn lessons. The degree of implementation in the centres was 100%, with approximately 4,701 participants, including the wider educational community and technical personnel. The documents generated throughout the project have been published on the website of the IWEO: Diagnostic Manual on Equality in Education; collection of good practices; guiding principles; "Plurales”, Course on Gender Equality"; diagnostic surveys applied to families, teachers, students and management teams; and through activities carried out in schools. As a final phase, the results have been compiled in the document “Final Methodological Proposal” and promoted through the project’s web page as well as in several seminars and conferences.
