Description

The current project is dealing with two topics: 1. The first aim is to enhance the competences in spatial econometrics and developing curricula and obtaining teaching experience in English for international students. As a result Prof. Bivand has given a 2-day course in spatial econometrics and a seminar on recent research using spatial econometrics has been organized. Existing contacts between researchers have been renewed. One instructor from University of Tartu has been at Norwegian School of Economics for a short term teaching leave and gained teaching experience abroad. 2. Secondly the project aims to address the effect of climate change on fungal diversity in Arctic habitats. The purpose of the applied visit is to improve bioinformatics and statistical skills of two PhD students. These new skills will improve their capacity to publish their PhD work. Both students are also included in at least one of the ongoing projects of partners and benefit from co-authorship

Summary of project results

The project involved activities of two faculties of University of Tartu: Faculty of Economics (staff mobility) and Faculty of Science and Technology (student mobility for research). Faculty of Economics: The project was needed in order to diversify the teaching of econometrics at the University of Tartu and to offer for PhD students appropriate mini-course that could be taken on top of regular econometrics courses. The sustainability will be insured by continuing the research in the field of spatial econometrics. In the next years it has been planned to continue to offer similar mini-courses. Faculty of Science and Technology: It was needed for learning of molecular techniques and preparation of a shared manuscript, which is intended for publication in 2016. Faculty of Economics: There was a rather high number of students participating in the lectures by prof. Roger Bivand, around 30. In addition to the students of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration there were also participants from the Tallinn University of Technology and the University of Tartu Institute of Social Studies. The final evaluation (grades as passed/not passed) was taken by 6 PhD students and 12 master students of the Quantitative Economics programme. Faculty of Science and Technology: The objectives were fulfilled.

Summary of bilateral results

Faculty of Economics: All communication with the partner institution (Norwegian School of Economics, NHH) went rather smoothly; but see previous point. Faculty of Science and Technology: It was excellent and the host was very welcoming and professional; no difficulties except for the high rental costs.
