Description

The project responds to a very difficult situation for children and youth with disabilities and their families. The project aims at comprehensive support for people caring for persons diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in the home environment. The project is focused on preventing physical and mental exhaustion of carers, to help prevent burnout of caregivers and thus eliminate the placement of persons with ASD into care. The main objective of the project is to ensure that people with autism grow up in a natural environment (functioning own family), in the community. The planned project outputs are the following: Respite apartment, Weekend Carers, Weekend stay for children and adolescents with ASD training for persons caring. The primary group of the project are children and adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The secondary target group are families who care about such children and adolescents.

Summary of project results

The main aim of the project was to support people providing care for persons diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders in the domestic environment. The aim of the project was to ensure that children and adolescents with autism grew up in a natural environment and working families, placement in care. The objectives of the project were: a) support for children and adolescents with autism – focus on development communication, cognitive and other skills of children and adolescents with autism, relaxation — as a part of reducing the impact of stress on health, b) support for families of persons with autism for the care of persons with autism in the domestic environment. These objectives were achieved and all planned project activities were successfully carried out. During the project, 24 persons with autism used respite apartment. Children/adolescents with autism participated in activities aimed at developing communication skills, autonomy, cognitive skills, practice in a foreign environment, etc. A weekend break for caregivers was organized – they participated in a weekend residence during 2 stays, each was attended by 12 people. The stays were prepared to prevent burnout of caring individuals and families as a whole. Carers attended a seminar on the problems of autism and were advised by qualified experts from National Institute of Autism (NAUTIS). As part of the project, deployment team held regular meetings (26 meetings in total).
