Description

Drowning is the second most common cause of sudden death after traffic accidents in the Czech Republic. However, prevention from drowning is provided only to a limited child population and only by nongovernmental volunteer organizations. The project will improve the knowledge of parents and children about safety rules related to safe behaviour while staying at the water or next to the water area. The aim of the project is to explain to children issues regarding self‐rescuing in water in a comprehensive way which is understandable to the selected age-group. Methodological materials will be prepared with a view to prevent drowning in the age-group ranging from nursery school to younger elementary school. Moreover, a campaign will be organized in the form of a road-show all around the Czech Republic, always put in place in locations related to water sports. The primary target group is children in age 4-11. The secondary target group is the parents of those children. The project partners will be Water Rescue and Helpik (association providing education of first aid). The partners will assist with organization of workshops and addressing target groups.

Summary of project results

Drowning is the second most important cause of injury death in children in the Czech Republic. Effective prevention strategies can reduce drowning. In the Czech Republic there are very poor instruments of drowning prevention. The aim of the project was to improve the awareness of parents and children about the principles of safe water and water behaviour and the prevention of drowning. The effort is to reach as many representatives of the target group as possible by means of various communication tools, to inform them and educate them. At the same time, create a personal, virtual, and visual campaign to explain to the target group elements of safe behaviour at water and rescue in water in a way that is clear and comprehensible. This goal was achieved through project activities and outputs and supported by great public interest. Sustainability of the project is ensured by constantly updating the project's online profiles, obtaining additional financial support for the continuation and development of project activities. Methodology for conducting workshops for children and parents, and supporting methodological and educational materials were completed. The overall concept of conducting the preventive campaign and the training program was developed. Information, educational and support materials for the target group were created. Web page and facebook profiles have been created and launched. A campaign to prevent drowning in the form of a roadshow of a prevention kiosk and educational workshops for parents and children led by the Kvaky frog (project mascot) were realized, as well as a banner campaign and an audio-visual campaign.
