Description

The University Hospital Ostrava has insufficient number of beds for complicated cases. The project aims to build (and equip) a modern day-time facility with capacity of 10 places closely cooperating with out-patient facility and applying comprehensive psychiatric therapy procedures and uninterrupted transition between individual treatment phases, which shall ensure better adherence of patients to treatment. Creation of this facility providing comprehensive therapy in close link to the modern and safely oriented out-patient tract will allow reduction in the length of hospitalization, improve provided care, improve functional skills of patients, ease their return to civil life and link ward care with therapy, out-patient care and social care. It will involve patients in activities offered by supporting organizations functioning in Ostrava which are also partners in the project. The gradual transition between individual treatment phases will improve adherence and response of patients to care. The Norwegian Centre for Integreted Telemedicine, University Hospital of North Norway HF is the donor project partner.

Summary of project results

The project aimed at creation of a comprehensive rehabilitation facility, which would bridge the treatment provided in the University Hospital Ostrava (UHO) and out-patient services for people with mental illness. A modern day-time facility for people suffering from psychotic and neurotic disorders was built as a unique care centre within the Moravian-Silesian Region. A complex rehabilitation programme applied therein is built around 5 components (preparation for release, psychotherapy in different forms, social and communication skills, participation on the therapy, health care) and is specifically adapted to patients shortly after release. The facility has a capacity of 10 places and is fully operational since May 2017. The programme for patients with psychotic diagnosis is of 4 week-duration. Its main benefit is the progressive transition from in-patient treatment which is based on already existing therapeutic alliances and thus eliminating stress linked with adaptation to new therapeutic environment. Moreover, instant continuation of the therapy is ensured as patients spend no time waiting for admission to external out-patient services , which is usually a critical momentum in their rehabilitation process. The day-time facility is cooperating with a number of supporting social and health-care organisations and CSOs, thus enabling patients to establish reliable relations for future engagement in the civil life. The staff of the facility underwent a number of trainings in order to be able to provide the comprehensive rehabilitation system of this type. The majority of funds was spent on construction of the facility, its furnishing and purchase of diagnostic, rehabilitation and training equipment.

Summary of bilateral results

Based on experience with the development of a system for assessing the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders in patients within Mental Hospital Bohnice in Prague), the partner, Norwegian Centre for Integrated Telemedicine, University Hospital of North Norway HF, provided consultations for implementation of the "SOMA score" into the IT system of the UHO.
