Description

The project is the first step towards a planned transformation of psychiatric care in the Czech Republic from institutional to more outpatient health care. So far the Psychiatric Hospital Cerveny Dvur has provided long term hospitalization for patients with drug addictions. For treatment to be successful there is a need to provide more outpatient therapy for patients. The project will create a centre for extending the spectrum of therapeutic activities and providing complex therapy, in view of shortening the time patients are hospitalized and speeding up the process of their return into civil life, extending alternative therapeutic processes from hospitalization to community and out-patient care. It will be managed by constructing a new unit which will help patients to adapt to social life, to use different therapeutic methods according to their needs and help them to manage their therapeutic process themselves. To achieve this there is a need of training of staff to implement new treatment methods and complex therapy system. There is no donor project partner.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was to create conditions for a new way of working in the institutional treatment of different addictions - from the flat structure of the therapeutic programme and the procedures offered to the patient regardless of the patient's possibilities and needs, with a longevity of hospitalization with uniform therapist approaches and limited therapeutical goals to the introduction of an individually adjustable programme according to the patient's possibilities and needs. This project´s goal has been fulfilled beyond expectations. The newly reconstructed and equipped department called “3D department” (Center of Enhanced and Differentiated Addictological Care, Diagnostics and Detoxification) has been working since 2 May 2016 and during the first year of the project implementation it was supported 580 patients and the results have been reported as very good. The new concept of developed care corresponds to the idea of transformation of psychiatry in the Czech Republic, and won the 1st prize for the addictological act of the year 2016. It greatly inspires other facilities to follow this model. The expected long-term impact is change of the whole concept of institutional treatment of addiction in the Czech Republic and the discussion among the general public about the new role of the therapist and the patient. Important part of the project was preparation of the team for a new way of working (31 employees trained). The results of these project´s outputs are unambiguous - the 3D department have offered patients a more comprehensive and individualized treatment, allowed to new group of patients enter the treatment (people with dual diagnoses, mothers with children, patients with only short time for treatment available and with different needs). 3D has provided many patients only short intensive institutional treatment and afterwards encouraged patients for a quick return to treatment at home or their natural environment. This is the first concept of individually adjusted, non-directive constitutional treatment, which further develops therapeutic ideas and changes the role of patient (the other existing institutional programmes in the Czech Republic are based on the apolinar model - with a flat programme structure, a more passive role of the patient, a flat patient limitation, sanction systems, a higher level of staff direction, etc.). There was no donor project partner.
