Description

The number of child injuries or accidents is unfortunately really high in the Czech Republic. For example the number is two times higher in comparison with Scandinavian countries. There is a strong emphasis on increasing the prevention in the Czech Republic from the EU and also national government. The main goal of the project is therefore to decrease number of child injuries. The Project will establish the Child Injury Prevention Centre at the University Hospital of Brno. This centre will implement all three types of child injury prevention. The Unit will actively search for target group (children at risk of injury) and will also be available for parents and any other individuals/institutions. Project will create several prevention programmes (how to prevent injuries, safety in the traffic system, injury aftermath, first aid, how to deal with injuries), purchase of equipment for the Unit, visit of the Norwegian Trauma-centre and creation of analysis of prevention activities.

Summary of project results

Within the project, the Preventive Unit was established within the Trauma Centre of the University Hospital Brno. Since June 2016 it has provided more than 140 preventive programmes for 50 groups of children. Based on the analysis of most frequent causes and mechanisms of child injuries and casuistic from its medical records, the team of experienced surgeons developed and launched three elementary preventive programmes ( safety, prevention and first aid when it comes to injury) plus 2 complementary programmes (transport injuries and recovery after severe injuries). Preventive programmes were tailored to various age-groups of kids (kindergarten to secondary school) and took place in devoted premises directly in the Trauma Centre to ensure maximum preventive effect. Children may also experience work with surgery tools, plasters, models of bones and organs. Within the programme „Back to life“ motivation visits of children that successfully recovered after serious injury to the child being hospitalised after major injury are organised. The preventive programmes are very effective. Targeted prevention is pursued by medical staff (doctors – surgeons), who are supported by a pedagogical worker who assists with the didactic aspect of the programme. Learning materials have been created and devoted web pages with interactive tools and demonstration videos were launched. Premises hosting programmes have been refurbished and equipped, models of bones and surgery drills for demonstration of surgeries were purchased. The programmes are very popular and booked several months in advance. Children's awareness of injuries was significantly increased by the project, and in the long run, reduction in the number of child injuries is expected. During the project implementation, 1 471 children attended preventive programmes.
