Description

The number of newborn children with low weight or/and with perinatal problems is highly increasing every year. To adapt to this situation and to ensure the highest quality treatment possible there is a need to increase effectivity of the secondary and tertiary prevention. The University Hospital unfortunately has outdated equipment which does not meet the requirements of actual trends in the field. There is also a need to improve educational programmes and activities towards the children's families. Under the project, units of the University Hospital Ostrava will be equipped with necessary devices and medical technology. The project also includes training programmes for the education of both medical personnel and patients and their parents. These measures shall ensure better quality of treatment and better prepare the unit for the high percentage of at-risk childbirths. There is no donor project partner.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the needs of the University Hospital in Ostrava in improving and modernising integrated primary and secondary care for child patients. By establishing and equipping the centre for complex care which was built in close proximity to departments of neurology, child resuscitation unit and paediatric clinic, a care for child patient was centralised to one workplace. Delivered equipment meets highest technological standards and is suitable for all age categories, including low-weight new-borns. The educational component of the project focused on professionals – medical staff but also on patients and their parents. Training of medical staff was organised via lectures, seminars and educational stays in order to deepen their knowledge in given domain of specialisation but mainly to strengthen the inter-disciplinary approach in child care. Education of patients and their parents was indispensable in order to ensure long-term effects of the treatment and follow-up care at home. A number of materials (DVDs, brochures) was issued and distributed. The project has significantly contributed to improved quality of diagnostic and therapeutic process (both inpatient and outpatient) of children in the Moravian Silesian region.
