Description

There have been many changes in last twenty years in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to perinatal and neonatal intensive health care. The main focus of the project is to provide secondary and tertiary prevention services through follow-up dispensary care at the perinatal centre. This will be managed by the purchase of specialized devices that allows for the examination of a range of organ systems in high risk newborns (the central nervous system, circulatory system, uropoetic (excretory/urinal) and gastrointestinal systems). The aim is to provide the best treatment possible and one which follows contemporary medical trends. An integral part of the project is the education of medical staff in long-term monitoring of high-risk newborns, namelytraining in Bayley Scales of Infant Development (a standard series of measurements to assess development of children in age 0-3). This activity will help improve the overall prediction of risk infants, and improve conditions for the early diagnosis of psychomotor and mental development disorders. The project will include an implementation of the preventive dispensary care programme.

Summary of project results

Almost 5% of high-risk neonates born in the Czech Republic are born in the Institute for the Care of Mother and Child (ICMC). The aim of the project was to create a follow-up dispensary care programme which would improve early-diagnosis of a number of severe neuro—sensoric disorders (i.e. visual and hearing impairments, metabolic disorders, malfunctions of central nervous system or retarded psycho-motoric development ) affecting low-weight high risk neonates. The programme comprises of a periodic series of screenings which are undertaken on newly acquired modern devices allowing examinations of a range of organ systems (the central nervous system, circulatory system, uropoetic (excretory/urinal), gastrointestinal systems). The programme is open to all high-risk neonates born in the Czech Republic. Besides investments to modern devices, two screening ambulances were completely refurbished and trainings of medical staff provided.
