Description

There is a long lasting problem of insufficient capacity in Dobřany Psychiatric Hospital especially for patients with a need of long treatment procedure. Therefore the project’s objective is to innovate health care methods, reduce the time patients spend in the institution, return patients to out-patient care - to their homes or community care centres. It aims to create a new therapy unit, which will use new, intensive methods of work with patients and better prepare them for coping with normal life in the community. To achieve this there is a need to reconstruct a building where the new programme will be implemented. This programme will focus on intensive preparation of patients to return to normal life by increasing their self-reliance. The unit will also be used as training room for new training programmes for the staff which shall increase efficiency of the project’s goal. The implementation of the project will help the whole Plzeň region to transit from institutional care to more out-patient oriented psychiatric health care. There is no donor project partner.

Summary of project results

Acute hospitalization in the Czech Republic lasts 50 days, however, in a number of EU countries it is a shorter period. The current situation in Czech psychiatric hospitals shows a significantly longer hospitalization. The frequent consequence of mental illness is chronification. Negative aspects predominate (limited contact with natural environment, loss of interest and activity, inability to return back and incorporate into society). The longer the treatment takes, the worse aspects appear and person with mental problems is even more stigmatized in the society. These facts altogether with planned changes in the field of psychiatry in the Czech Republic led to the necessity of implementation of this project. Its main objective was to innovate mental health care in order to shorten period of hospitalisation, accelerate return of the patient to non-hospital care, home or community care. To do so, new rehabilitation department with a comprehensive psychiatric rehabilitation system was reconstructed and equipped (pavilion 23). Project was focused on chronic patients, mainly with the diagnosis of schizophrenia and schizoaffective psychosis. For the needs of the project, the therapeutic aids and equipment for the therapeutic methods, which are part of a complex rehabilitation programme, were also purchased. The project has helped to improve mental health care in Pilsen region and helped to transit from institutional care to more out-patient oriented psychiatric health care. Work with families of the patients was important. The system of comprehensive rehabilitation for mentally ill patients has applied a holistic view of the patient with respect to his / her own goals and wishes, with active participation in the development of the treatment plan. Establishment of a care system with a significant component of psychiatric rehabilitation (PR) is an intermediate stage and preparation for the transition to community care or outpatient care. Implementation of the project has also led to more intense cooperation with non-governmental organizations providing community care. During the project implementation, 72 patients underwent rehabilitation and 20 employees were trained. In sum, the psychiatric rehabilitation system has prepared patients to manage their own living in non-hospital and community-based care what should subsequently lead to lower the necessity of rehospitalisation. Patients’ quality of life has increased. It is expected, that in the long term, the treatment period in hospitals will reduce. There was no donor project partner.
