Description

The project is focused on the psychiatric care of people with serious mental illnesses and the creation of methodology of integrated system of psychiatric rehabilitation. The main objective is to improve psychiatric care in the Czech Republic. Expected outcomes are the implementation of uniform procedures and diagnostic tools, the creation of a therapeutic-rehabilitation system, and the implementation of models of sharing good clinical practice. This will be achieved after an assessment of the system of the rehabilitation process and an establishment of therapeutic guidelines as well as the creation of conferences and publications. The project is targeted at the healthy population, with the emphasis on children, social workers, pediatricians, teachers, mentally ill patients in all phases of treatment, and treatments at mental hospitals. Oslo Hospital University, as donor partner, will participate in all activities of the project - preparing methodology, implementing the pilot study, data collection, and study tours. The partnership will contribute to the creation of a comprehensive psychiatric rehabilitation system for the mentally ill.

Summary of project results

Thanks to the project, it was possible to create and implement methodology for system of rehabilitation at inpatient psychiatric facilities of patients with serious mental illness (“S.U.P.R. methodology”). Such methodology was completely missing in the CR before the project´s implementation. Created 5 educational brochures, website and 4 conferences were important in order to increase awareness of mental health problems. Knowledge of the public was very limited and if, it tended to stigmatise people with mental health disorders. Activities also contributed towards increased prevention of psychotic illnesses in the population. In cooperation with Oslo University Hospital, used methods, forms of individual and crisis plans were discussed. This collaboration contributed towards enhancement of quality of provided services. 6 mutual bilateral study visits helped to improve understanding of different health systems and to share knowledge and experience. Pilot version of the new programme was launched in 12 centres in the whole CR and involved 241 patients. Results were captured in the Manual. Development and implementation of this system was important in order to support individual needs of patients and increase respect of their individual pace of treatment progress. In this newly created system and methodology, 211 people were trained. Other 120 people were educated e.g. in work with families, in method CAN (mapping of individual needs). These trainings were necessary in order to prepare staff for the new way of work with patients. Moreover, 28 people were certified in the Train-the-Trainer Programme in the CARe model (Comprehensive Approach to Rehabilitation). This training provided necessary knowledge and skills to support persons in vulnerable situations, due to psychiatric conditions. Trained trainers were able to educate other colleagues and guaranteed sustainability of implementation of rehabilitation methods. There were also organised 13 seminars for preventive workers, families of patients, teachers or general practitioners with participation of more than 270 people. All these activities were necessary in order to raise awareness about mental health care, early detection, intervention of mental problems and prevention of serious mental illness. Project helped to improve the quality of mental health care, humanised the provided care and clearly defined health indications for hospitalisation. Moreover, such system enabled the improvement of interconnection of extramural and inpatient care and it facilitated patient transition into the normal life.

Summary of bilateral results

The partner, Oslo Hospital University, participated in analysis of the current state of care, preparation of methodology, data collection, preparation and implementation of preventive activities, and study trips. Thanks to the bilateral cooperation, new therapeutic guidelines were established and new system of psychiatric rehabilitation set up. Partners shared good clinical practice, their know-how and recommendations.
