Description

The overall objectives of this project are (1) strengthen relationship between MENDELU, NMBU and Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute; (2) to increase the knowledge about the minirhizotron (image processing and data evaluation) and microscope techniques (SEM, TEM and confocal microscope) for the forest research studies (two courses during two weeks stay lead by Dr. Borja and Dr. Nagy from Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute); (3) to plant joint project and publication (data evaluation from a former Norwegian grant - A/CZ0046/2/0009); (4) to implament know-how from research stay to student´s lesson (for forestry student - course: General Forest Botany) – at least 50 students will attend the course.

Summary of project results

The project consisted of two courses: (i) the course of minirhizotron techniques lead by Isabella Borja and (ii) the course of microscopy techniques lead by Nina E. Nagy. During the workshop installation of minirhizotrons was shown and root growth analysis from minirhizotron images was done. Within microscopy course preparation of samples for scanning electron microscope (SEM) was shown and surface of Norway spruce needles of different age and heath status was investigated by SEM - in particular cuticle and stomata structure was observed. The workshops took place in As, Norway, both in the field and in the laboratory. Applicant learnt selected techniques used in the plant research which will be applicable for the research of Norway spruce dieback in the Czech Republic. We processed the samples of plant material collected in Norway and brought by the car from the Czech Republic. Also, we discussed prospect for future cooperation and project proposals regarding the forest health.
