Description

The Norwegian and Czech experience of transatlantic mobility is quite similar in many ways - mass emigration in the 19th and 20th century to the Americas, the institutionalization of expatriate communities and efforts to preserve the national identity. The CZ emigration in the second half of the 20th century, and especially the current international mobility bring new research challenges that are not sufficiently reflected in the philological research and lack integration in study fields. The comparison of historical experiences, research methods leads to join activities: 1) new academic courses; 2) publication; 3) implementation of a digital database of sources. The CZ team contributes to disseminate knowledge about CZ emigration in Scandinavia and Americas; the NO team implements the minority perspective in migration studies. The project works actively with young researchers who develop research and teaching competences and acquire experience in using of modern technology.

Summary of project results

The Norwegian and Czech experience of transatlantic migration was the common research topic. The project fulfilled the planned join activities: 1) elaboration and realization of three new academic courses at the Charles University; 2) preparation and publication of academic join publication; 3) implementation of a digital database of sources on Czech emigration to Latin America at www.lamigrace.cz. 3) research mobility to CZ and No; The project included actively young researchers who developed research and teaching competences and acquired experience in using of modern technology and working in a international academic environment. The project helped us to develop research topics that were not part of the research and study agenda at the Charles University. We provided three semester courses for students at Charles University. Because of space and time schedule limits at the Charles University (that resides at five different buildings at Prague and suffer of space limitation) the planned courses were not organized according the best schedule for the target students groups. The project prepared two scholarly books that are to be published in 2017 and a Webpage about migration (lamigrace.cz)is to be launched. The project results suffered in delay in budget spending (student money) because of when several administrative limitations were raise by DZS at the beginning of the project (November 2015). First in March 2016 we received a clear instruction about budget spending and that was one of main reason why some results connected to student work load became delayed in realization (books, webpage).

Summary of bilateral results

The project involved seven scholars and Ph.D. students from both universities in common academic and project work and enabled the international cooperation in research dissemination and teaching. The Czech team has had a unique opportunity to develop professional career. The important impact of the cooperation was in the field of education, research and teaching training of PhD. students and early career scientist that experienced an international project and implemented their research ideas and skills, as well as, developed skills in implementation new academic course curriculum and teaching in an international environment. The students of all programs (BA, MA, Ph.D.) at the Department of Scandinavians studies at Charles University in Prague have got an unique opportunity to meet during the semester
