Description

“EMPOWER YOUTH” key objective is to assist youth become more aware of the many challenges in setting up and running a successful business and the ways to overcome them. Youth unemployment is high. Most Cyprus businesses do not invest in training and/or developing their employees, nor do they provide students from universities / secondary schools with opportunities to learn at workplace. Many young people, to avoid long term unemployment, eventually try to set up their own business with high risk of failure, as many of them never had any prior exposure to entrepreneurial thinking. Highly practical /interactive workshops, mentoring and professional support services are key aspects for youth in successfully setting up and running a business or in entering the workplace. This is what this project aims to provide the participants with. Target group is people age 18-31, who are or have high risk in becoming long term unemployed/idle.

Summary of project results

Τhe project has managed to attract the interest of a number of individuals mainly in the wider geographical area of Nicosia, whilst announcements and discussions on two occasions through Cyprus TV programmes enabled knowledge about the benefits of the programme to be transmitted in the whole of the Republic of Cyprus. Unemployed youth and others from disadvantaged areas were provided with the opportunity through attending the workshops to gain knowledge, skills and the required professional ethos and plan their career path in a more insightful, focused and efficient/effective manner. Youth had the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of the Programme and some of the factors to consider in setting up their own business or during the job searching process. The project met its originally set outcomes, and sometimes over passed them. More specifically 110 youth were trained in the workshops and 104 youth were provided with mentoring services, for 430 hours. 39 youth were provided with professional support services for 485 hours. The original target was 35 young people for 15-20 hours per person on an as needed basis.
