Summary of project results

The project aimed at raising awareness among young people and society as a whole of the new models of gender-based violence related to Internet and mobile communications as an important space for communication, information and socialization of adolescents. The project focused on one aspect of GBV – online violence in intimate relationships and sexual abuse among young people. Another form of violence against girls and young women is the pressure upon them to show off in a sexually explicit way on their public profiles or to send sexual photos or videos of themselves. Furthermore it makes the girls an easier target for grooming, child pornography production, and traffic. The project contributed to capacity building in professionals to work to reduce GBV in a couple of aspects: creation and distribution of an lesson plan and guidelines for conducting an interactive lesson for raising awareness among teenagers; delivering a series of educational seminars with representatives of Juvenile Delinquency Commission and Local Commissions for Combating Juvenile Delinquency for prevention and reaction in cases of online violence among peers; organizing an expert roundtable for discussing policies and practices for prevention of and counteraction in cases of GBVonline; enhancing the professionals’ skills and motivation for cooperation with young people. The promoter held a seminar for young people during which participants were invited to apply for taking part in the implementation of the project. Following the receipt of the applications (about 200) a panel of 17 members was set up (four Roma youngsters) who further actively participated in the information campaign as well as in the organization of most events – conferences, flashmobs, and roundtable. Another activity was the preparation of a lesson plan. The draft version was presented at six seminars/working meetings with professionals. After the plan was completed 33 teachers from six towns were taught how to apply it the lessons and it was piloted at schools among students from 5th to 12th grade. As for the information campaign – materials were sent and disseminated to more than 250 schools around the country as well as at various events – Youth Conference, Safer Internet Day, seminars, etc. PP experts also took part in radio and TV programmes. Through the use of paid ad on Facebook more than 120 000 young people were also reached.
