Description

In line with the common EU objectives, the national renewable energy target of reaching 14,65% in the final energy consumption by 2020 is defined in the Hungarian National Energy Strategy 2030, and in the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan. This target is underlined by the project, which also helps households to cut their energy costs and reduce GHG emissions, which benefits measures against climate change. As a result of this project, a geothermal production well will be established. This project includes all relevant tasks (preparation, drilling) related to this well. The project will be implemented in close cooperation with the Iceland GeoSurvey, a Donor Partner from Iceland. The district heating system of Kiskunhalas is now based on gas fired steam boilers and gas engines providing heat for about 1.248 flats and one public building. The district heating system can be extended with the individually heated public buildings. According to the calculations, the geothermal district heating system will very likely be able to cover 99 % of the heat demand of the expected consumers.

Summary of project results

The objective of the project was to explore the possibilities on how to utilize one of the natural resources of Hungary, namely the environmentally friendly, renewable and affordable geothermal energy in the existing, currently on fossil fuel based district heating system of Kiskunhalas, which is of high interest of both the city and its residents. During the implementation of the project, Kiskunhalas Geothermal Project Limited Liability Company completed a geological exploratory drilling to test whether the district heating systems of the town could be transformed to geothermal energy source based system, instead of the currently used natural gas. The well extends to 2.500 meter depth at the moment, which means it reached the concession limit but unfortunately no geothermal fluid was found.

Summary of bilateral results

The involved bilateral partner shared its experiences with regards to the geothermal developments, supported the project management, these activities improved the knowledge of the participants. Bilateral fund did not involve and contribute to strengthening bilateral relations at this project.
