Cooperation to promote CCS technology
Supported by Norway, projects to explore the use of carbon capture and storage technology in the Czech Republic as well as raise awareness on how CCS can be used for climate change mitigation are getting underway.
The Czech Republic and Norway both see the need for common international efforts to promote carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a mitigating measure against climate change.
Contribute to increased knowledge of carbon capture and storage
Funded by Norway Grants, the programme 'Pilot Studies and Surveys on CCS Technology' in the Czech Republic responds to the need for increased knowledge and awareness relating to the capture, transport and storage of carbon dioxide as a mitigating measure against climate change.
The programme supports pilot studies and research of technologies to determine whether it is technically and financially possible to apply the capture and storage of carbon dioxide in the Czech Republic. The programme also enable the development of international cooperation, exchange of experience and education of experts in this field, as well as providing information to the general public.
The programme was presented at a launch conference in Prague today. The conference also included discussions on CCS in broader European context and the Norwegian experience.
The only large-scale CCS projects currently in operation in Europe – the Sleipner/Gudrun and Snøhvit fields – are located on the Norwegian continental shelf.
Pilot studies and surveys
Following calls for proposals under the programme in 2014, four projectswill be implemented and the preparatory activities have already started. All the projects were presented at the launch conference on 8 April. Three of the projects are implemented in cooperation with partners from Norway. The four projects are:
- A research pilot project on CO2 geological storage in the Czech Republic implemented in cooperation with the International Research Institute of Stavanger. The project is building on the long-term research partnership between the Czech Geological Service and the Norwegian partner.
- A technical and economic study of CCS pilot technologies for coal fired power plants implemented in cooperation with SINTEF Energy Research.
- A research of high temperature CO2 sorption from flue gas using carbonate loop. The project will contribute to research on the potential for the application of CCS under the conditions existing in the Czech Republic.
- A knowledge sharing and awareness raising project on CCS technologies and the possible solution CCS represents in mitigating climate change. The project is implemented in cooperation with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Use of data on the actual storage of CO2 in Norway and the US will be a part of the relevant information on CCS technologies.
The programme is funded by € 5 million by Norway through the Norway Grants.
