School renovation in Hungary

  • The Pál Nagy Elementary and Catering Vocational School in Bük, Hungary, has started a comprehensive renovation and reconstruction project.

Thanks to €1.2 million in support from the Norway Grants, the local government in Bük will renovate and partly reconstruct the Pál Nagy Elementary and Catering Vocational School. The condition of the school building has deteriorated considerably since its construction in 1960.

3100 square meters of the school will be renovated and reconstructed, and a new loft will be installed. The project also includes purchase of new equipment for kitchen in the vocational catering school and a series of IT training courses. The Norwegian School of Hotel Management at the University of Stavanger is involved as a partner in the project.

More than 300 students will benefit from the renovation works, which are scheduled to be finished in time for the opening of the new school year 2010-2011.

Local authorities emphasise that the project will help meet the increased need for qualified labour in the region. Bük is situated close to the Austrian border, and many young Hungarians choose to move abroad in search of employment and new opportunities. The local authorities hope that the reconstructed Pál Nagy Elementary and Catering Vocational School will stimulate job creation in the region, especially within the fields of tourism and catering.
