International Workshop: Facing the challenges in combating terrorist financing
The workshop, financed by the EEA and Norway Grants, will bring together more than 70 experts, including directors of financial intelligence units in member states of the European Union, to discuss challenges and progress in the implementation of the EU Commission Action Plan on anti-terrorist financing (ATF). Additionally, the experts will assess how policies and practices can be reinforced to address relevant risks in a rapidly evolving environment.
The recent attacks in the European Union and beyond has underlined the need for the EU to work across all policies to prevent and fight terrorism. Terrorist organisations and individual terrorists need financing – to maintain their networks, to recruit and supply, and to commit terrorist acts themselves. Cutting off sources of finance, making it harder to escape detection when using these funds, and using any information from the financing process to best effect can all therefore make a powerful contribution to the fight against terrorism.
