Description
The education of people working with children and youth in the area of providing information about sexual orientation, gender identity, homophobia prevention, hate crime and hate-speech is almost non-existent. As a result homophobia and prejudices against the LGBTI community are still present in the society, often even more so between youth, what often leads to bullying. The goal of the project is to prevent bullying and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity among youth through the training of adults working with children and youth. 18 university students, 18 elementary school teachers and 18 NGO workers will be trained to diminish homophobia, hate crime and hate speech in a school environment targeted against the LGBTI people. 3 educational courses will be created and 3 methodologies will help spread good practices.
Summary of project results
The education of people working with children and youth in the area of providing information about sexual orientation, gender identity, homophobia prevention, hate crime and hate-speech is almost non-existent. As a result, homophobia and prejudices against the LBGTI community are still present in society, often even more so among youth, which often leads to bullying. The project was aimed to prevent bullying and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity among youth through training of adults working with children and young people. 15 university students, 20 primary and high school teachers and 14 NGO workers were trained to diminish homophobia, hate crime, and hate speech targeted against the LGBTI people in the school environment. Educational courses were designed, and so were methodologies that will help spread good practices. Students, teachers, and NGO employees received knowledge which they can use in defending human rights. Also, their argumentation skills were improved and the participants gained new contacts. The results will be maintained through trained workers who will be the multipliers of the given topic in organisations and schools. The long-term impact will be enhanced, if the programme is accredited by the Ministry of Education SR (the application has been sent to the Ministry), which could lead to an increased motivation of potential participants to take part in the course. In addition, the methodology is processed to tackle the issue of rights of LGBTI people in general, as well as with an emphasis on the school environment.
