Description

The behavior of children in the town Jelsava has become increasingly worse in the past years, the reason being that the families are facing crisis ad although children are raised in families, they are often being neglected. Thus it is necessary to guide parents in child raising, so that the children could proactively participate in the life of majority society in the future. The goal of the project is to establish a community center that will provide space for an overall development of children and family and that will provide a safe platform for an effective participation in society. Also a new platform will be created for the participation of marginalized groups in the village (13 events). The community centre will be available to approximately 5000 children and their families, whereas the work will be directly conducted with 200 clients. 30 volunteers will participate in the project and 2 work places will be created. The Salvation Army in the Czech Republic will provide the experience with establishing a community centre and work with children.

Summary of project results

The behaviour of children in Jelšava has become increasingly worse in the past years. The main reasons causing this situation is the fact that that families in the town are facing crisis, and although children are raised in their environment, they are often neglected. A need to guide parents in child care is already obvious - the families need help so that the children can be raised to eventually proactively participate in the life of the society in the future. Thanks to the project, a community centre offering a safe environment for children and young people from the town of Jelšava was built and participation of marginalized groups in the village supported. In the new community centre, 13 workshops and cultural exhibitions were held. 158 clients were directly involved in intervention and prevention programmes. 43 educational activies were delivered, especially to children and young people. 2 jobs were created, 77 volunteers involved. Altogether, 4,467 people benefited from the project activitzies. Children and young people were provided a safe environment for their personal development and leisure activities. Mothers and entire families had a chance to participate in workshops and cultural events. Volunteers developed their communication and social skills, and municipal representatives received information about the specific features of Roma culture and the reasons of their poverty. The stabilitity of the centre will be futher developed and constinuation of its activities ensured. Its operation is related to the log-term impact of the project, creation of the safe environment for children and young people from the town of Jelšava.
