Summary of project results

In Slovakia, the majority of biologically degradable waste (BDW) is deposited to landfill sites. From this source, two important greenhouse gases (GHG) are produced: methane and carbon dioxide. Composting is one of the important measures to decrease GHG emissions. The objective of the project was to increase awareness of the broad and expert public on good practices in composting and contribute to fulfilling the obligation of Slovakia set by the EU Council. The project was very successful and the objective was fully achieved. The Beneficiary is further working in the waste management area and the results will be further developed. Better legislation related to management of BDW was introduced – all proposals created in the project were accepted in the process of preparation of the new Act on Waste. The public has better access to the information on composting. As a pilot example of change at the local level, 92 % of households in a municipality of Chocholná-Velčice practice composting and the municipality become a model example of good practice in the area of composting. The project outcomes were fully reached. 8 pieces of expert documents were prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Environment supported by 24 personal meetings. For the public, 16 types of printed materials were prepared and distributed, website www.kompost.sk launched, 8 information news sent to all municipalities in the country. Also, 14 lectures for the broad public (363 participants), 9 seminars for municipal representatives engaged in waste management (269 part.) and a 2-day conference (28 - 29 January 2015, 107 part.) were organised. 9 press releases were sent to the media and one press conference organised. In Chocholná-Velčice, more than 260 ton of BDW was deposited for composting and 523 tons of CO2 saved in the project period.
