Description

Natural values Lake Bohinj and Krn - moraine in the area of Triglav National Park (TNP) are visited by many tourists due to the attraction of their preserved nature. This is positive for local economic development; however, non-sustainable car mobility of visitors, especially in the summer season, endangers their nature. The objective of the project is to expand possibilities and increase attraction of visiting all included natural values and TNP, respectively, by various modes of soft mobility (walking and biking, public transport), enhance the understanding of visitors about the impact of motor traffic on nature, and reduce car traffic load of nature values included. The goal of the project is to expand accessibility of both natural values included for all groups of visitors, enhance the attraction of their experiencing and by reducing load of individual motor traffic contribute to the preservation of nature. The partnership between organizations from different parts of Slovenia will also enable expansion of ideas, connect the areas and crate new links.

Summary of project results

The project was needed to address the issue of excessive pressure from motorised traffic on natural assets. In the scope of the project, investments were made to regulate stationary traffic. The goal of the project was to expand accessibility of both natural values (Lake Bohinj and Krn – moraine) included for all groups of visitors, enhance the attraction of their experiencing and by reducing load of individual motor traffic contribute to the preservation of nature. The results of the studies will be used to establish good communication with target groups concerning the introduction of sustainable mobility and implementation of appropriate communication tools. Project implementation achieved the following main objectives of the project, namely: - to raise awareness of the negative impact of unsustainable traffic on the environment; - to increase the attractiveness of sustainable mobility among all groups of visitors to natural sites; - to enhance the scope and quality of nature experience and interpretation in natural sites. Project outcomes and outputs: - Network of upgraded parking lots equipped with Intelligent Transportation System applications at Lake Bohinj; - Sustainable parking lots at the Krn - Moraine natural asset in the area of Krn pastures; - Decreased number of motorised visitors to natural assets; - Established bike rental service, two bike rental points and bike purchase; - Established two sustainable mobility information points; - Prepared programmes which combine nature protection and natural heritage experience with better accessibility - New public infrastructure for visitors to major protected areas of nature; - Visitor infrastructure which connects natural heritage protection with better accessibility; - Visitor programmes which connect the content, infrastructure, organisation and promotion/awareness-raising aspects of protection and experience of natural heritage with enhanced sustainable accessibility. The target groups of the project were members of local communities and visitors. Both were asked to participate in a survey about sustainable mobility in the area. The main benefit of the project was improved knowledge of these target groups about the potential benefits of sustainable mobility, and the related increase in their quality of life.
