Summary of project results

The project was important and necessary because of the need to increase the awareness of the values represented by the Katowice realisations from the period of modernism. This is particularly important in the period of changes which have been taking place in the structure of the city in recent years. The research results obtained in the framework of the project were presented to the city and regional authorities responsible for urban planning and protection of cultural heritage. The main aim of the project was to present in a comprehensive manner (taking into account the period 1920-1990) the influence of modernist ideas and concepts in urban planning and architecture on the shape of urban space of Katowice and its characteristic image. At the same time, the development of Katowice was presented against the background of an important stage of the development of European urban planning thought. The conducted research clearly showed that the Katowice achievements in the modernist period are important elements of the European cultural heritage of that period. The actions taken in the project resulted in a PhD thesis entitled “Modernist determinants of the spatial development of Katowice in comparison with similar examples of European cities” and a scientific monograph summarising the whole undertaking (entitled “Determinants of modernism in spatial development of Katowice on the background of European examples”). The results of parts of the research were presented at two scientific conferences (one national and one international) and in two papers that will appear in scientific journals (one listed in the Web of Science). At the same time, an exhibition entitled “The evolution of housing in Katowice in the context of European examples of modernist architecture TALL, LOW ... ALWAYS DENSE” was prepared at which the evolution of modernist housing architecture of Katowice was shown against the background of European examples. The main benefactor of the project was its Principal Investigator. The realisation of the undertaking and the obtained funding (248019,- PLN) allowed to prepare a PhD thesis resulting in a PhD in technical sciences and the above mentioned publications (in collaboration or only by the PI). On the other hand, knowledge about the local achievements in the area of urban planning and architecture of this period was disseminated to local, national and international audiences.
