Description

In 2013 habitat restoration works had been carried out in more than 70 Natura 2000 sites in Lithuania, but the problems in maintaining their good conservation status still persist. Achieved results in open habitat restoration are not sustainable enough due to lack of recurring management activities at these sites. Problem areas are sites were land abandonment processes have taken place and where no conditions for self-efficient land use no longer exists (one-off habitats restoration investments were not enough). Thus the project is intended to develop 50 Individual Recommendations on how to create economically efficient and long lasting management mechanisms, based on site specific use and land management requirements. Development of management recommendations will include evaluation of site-specific and socio-economic aspects, as well as possibilities for involvement of local farmers/communities/business representatives. The project will strengthen and improve the further management of the selected areas.

Summary of project results

Until the end of 2013 the initial habitat restoration works had been carried out in more than 70 Natura 2000 sites. But the problems in maintaining their good conservation status still persist. Achieved results in open habitat restoration are not sustainable enough due to lack of recurring management activities there. Problem areas are sites were land abandonment processes have been taken place and where no conditions for self-efficient land use exist anymore (one-off habitats restoration investments were not enough). Thus the project is intended to develop 50 Individual Recommendations how to create mostly economically useful, efficient and long lasting individual management mechanisms, according to specific site use, land management requirements. Special attention was paid to the sites where initial habitat restoration works have been completed. Development of management recommendations include evaluation of site-specific socio-economic aspects and possibilities for involvement of local farmers/communities/relevant business representatives. A special information for local farmers/communities/relevant business representatives was prepared too, including the ideas, how to participate in nature management in economically useful ways. The Project was strengthen and improve further management of the selected areas, through deeper knowledge of open habitats maintenance approach involving local farmers/communities/relevant business representatives. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of management means and management mechanisms and to compare the results from different Natura 2000 sites, standardised methodology was prepared, including uniform list of good state indicators and their determination principles for aimed species and habitats.
