Description

The General Hospital “Mamatsio-Bodossakio” operates two buildings which are located in the cities of Kozani and Ptolemaida. These two cities are characterized by intense pollution and environmental damages associated with mining activities and coal-based energy production stations in the area. The objective of the project is to improve the sustainable development of the Hospital by utilizing Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in order to partially cover the energy demands of the two buildings. Through the project vacuum solar collectors and absorption heat pumps will be installed producing domestic hot water and cooling, especially during summertime when the district heating system is off. The project is expected to achieve the increase of renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness in the sustainable use of renewable energy, familiarizing inhabitants with sustainable practices and improving the quality of life. The main beneficiaries of the project will be multitudinous groups like local citizens, patients, and visitors.

Summary of project results

The aim of the programme was to introduce RES technology that would avoid CO2 emissions of 316 tonnes per year and the reduction of consumed energy from lignite combustion and from diesel equal to 1,149.80 MWh / year. The evaluation of the efficiency of the solar collector systems, of each of the two hospitals and the relevant calculations of the energy benefit, i.e. the total consumption of renewable energy, were carried out. Finally, the calculations of the environmental benefit by the consequent avoidance of CO2 emissions from the substitution of conventional thermal and electricity with renewable energy produced were carried out. The study and the relevant calculations show that the objectives of the Programme are overachieved as shown below: 1.Total RES consumption: 1211 MWh/year (Target: 1149.80 MWh/year) 2. Reduction or avoidance of CO2 emissions: 357 tn/year(Target: 316 tn/year) 3. Events within the framework of bilateral relations:6 (Target: 6) The two hospitals have installed RES systems and have replaced the use of Diesel, for the production of hot water from solar energy. Moreover, solar energy is used to cover part of the required cooling load by reducing electrical consumption and supplement heating in the winter months. By installing equipment for monitoring the operation and performance of the systems and also by taking appropriate administrative measures, to ensure that the equipment is maintained in an optimal operating condition, the results will be sustained. Moreover, the following items were produced as a result of the programme: • printed information material • printed information material in Braille • On-line Presentation of the results to both Hospitals’ Websites • A conference addressed to the public on 28 March 2017 • A conference addressed to the technical directors and administrators of the hospitals of the 3rd Health District of Macedonia on November 29, 2016 • Measuring systems with associated equipment to record, monitor, and thus ensure the installation’s operational effect.
