Description

Alexandroupolis is a city in Northern Greece and the capital of the Evros regional unit in East Macedonia and Thrace. It is an important port and commercial center of northeastern Greece. The objective of the project is to support vulnerable groups in Alexandroupolis, who have limited knowledge on sustainable development and Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Through the project suitable RES Technologies (Photovoltaics, Solar thermal collectors, Geothermal heat pumps, biomass heating etc.) will be applied to public buildings that support these groups (Open Care Centers for the Elderly, Kindergartens, Cultural Center etc.). The project is expected to achieve the increase of renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness and education in sustainability. The main beneficiaries of the project will be vulnerable groups in the local area. The general public will also be able to learn about RES through the dissemination material of the project.

Summary of project results

Municipalities own and manage a significant number of buildings that are usually inefficient in terms of energy consumption. As far as Alexandroupolis is concerned, according to its Sustainable Energy Action Plan, the municipal buildings constitute approximately 40% of the overall carbon footprint of the municipal activities and approximately 2% of the total carbon footprint of the Municipality. It is evident that the integration of Renewable Energy Sources technologies in municipal buildings and in particular in buildings that accommodate social services is important in order to promote sustainability and low carbon economy. The interventions were implemented in four (4) Nursery School buildings, two (2) Open Centers for elderly support buildings, one (1) office building and one (1) nursing home building. The total area of the buildings is 10,757.98 m2 showing the increased impact of project REIS2. This demonstration project constitutes a step forward for the improvement of the utilisation of RES technologies in public buildings and is in line with the Sustainable Energy Action Plan of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis. It contributes to the renewable energy production by 950,59 MWh/year (Target: 927.69 MWh/year), to the reduction of CO2 emissions by 230.22 tn/year (Target: 228.17 tn/year). Also, during the project 2 events within the framework of bilateral relations were organized. (target: 2). Outputs delivered include: • Solar thermal system with flat plate solar collector of 30.29 m2 for supporting the heating and domestic hot water system of B’ KAPI Alexandroupolis • Geothermal heat pump system of 100 KWth for heating and domestic hot water in A’ Nursery School • Heat pump of 175 kWth for heating and domestic hot water and autonomous PV system of 5 kWp for covering part of the electrical demand of B’ Nursery School • Heat pump of 166.1 kWth for heating and domestic hot water and autonomous PV system of 12.5 kWp for covering part of the electrical demand of Z’ Nursery School • Geothermal heat pump system of 100 KWth for heating and domestic hot water in B’ Nursery School of Feres • Biomass boiler of 250 kWth for heating and domestic hot water and autonomous PV charging station of 5 kWp installed in “Polydynamo” Culture Center • Biomass boilers of total power of 610 kWth for heating and domestic hot water, solar thermal system of domestic hot water of 41.6 m2, and autonomous PV system of 5 kWp installed in “Agios Kyprianos’” building • Biomass boiler of 150 kWth for heating and domestic hot water installed in A’ KAPI Alexandroupolis
